Arachnid's 27th Anniversary BullShooter Finals was a huge success with Team USA highlighting the weekend with a victorious International Cup win. The USA Team, Bob Hudzik, Ben Dersch, Eric Blackledge and Scott Miller competed against five other international teams from Belgium, Germany, Japan, Portugal, and Spain. The Finals took place at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare, in Rosemont, IL. The five-day international tournament was held May 24-28, 2012. The player numbers were way up and it was an exciting weekend of dart competition, parties and making new friends. Many players reunited for the annual world finals, but many new first-time players were also in attendance.
On Thursday, May 24, a 4-person team event started off the weekend for early arrivals. The teams numbers were up and 100% of the entry fees collected were returned to the players. Then on Friday, the annual Top Gun event took place in singles and triples events. The singles was a four-division Cricket match that was played in a single elimination format of three out of five with the very best players left at the end all trying to win the big check for 1st place. The prestigious Pro-Pro AA Top Gun Singles was won by Randy "Big Dog" Van Deursen, from Lindenhurst, IL, after winning a tie-breaker match against Ray Carver, from North Aurora, IL, that could have gone either way. Willard Bruguier, from Summerset, SD, won Top Gun Men's Singles, veteran player Paula Murphy, from Orange Park, FL, won the Women's A-AA Top Gun Singles and Amor Moreno, from Spain, won the Women's B Top Gun Singles. There was also a Top Gun Triples event played in two divisions. Shea Reynolds, Ben Dersch and Steve Hilger won the Pro & Pro AA division and Del Kahuli, Richard Sutton and Katie Holmes won the Top Gun Open Triples.
Shelby Beilfuss beautifuly sang the National Anthem with the players cheering and getting pumped up for some exciting competition on Saturday morning. The room was filled with doubles teams starting off the 24 main events with Men's 501 Doubles, Pro 501 Doubles, Pro AA 501 Doubles, Women's B 301 Doubles, Women's A 501 Doubles and Women's AA 501 Doubles. After some players were eliminated from the charts, a Men's Doubles 2nd Chance was played The afternoon events started with Pro & Pro AA Cricket Luck Doubles and ended with Mixed Cricket Doubles.
We had many excellent shooters from around the world, Daisuke Akamatsu and Shumpei Noge, from Japan, captured the Men's 501 Doubles championship after defeating Jeff Moles and John Snyder, from Indiana. The Pro AA Doubles was an awesome match with Ray Carver and Darin Young coming from the loser's bracket to take the first three games to tie it up. The first game in the second set Darin and Ray took the first game and Marti Santamaria and Jose Justicia took the second game. The Trip 20 was hit time after time with the spectators being awed by the many Ton 80's. Darin took out the next game and Marti and Jose took out the fourth game to take it to a tie-breaker match. Marti and Josei captured the tie-breaker winning the Pro AA Doubles championship and $2,000 in cash for their victory. Shea Reynolds and Paula Murphy sailed through the Women's AA 501 Doubles event undefeated to face the tough team of Lisa Yee and Julie Weger in the Bull Pen. Lisa and Julie needed to win two matches to claim the championship, but Paula took out the first game and Shea took out the second game to end the match and claim the honors of first place and $2,000 in prize money.
The annual International Team event started Sunday with the teams marching into the room waving their country's flag to the music of their national anthem. There were six countries representing Belgium, Germany, Japan, Portugal, Spain and the USA. After pictures were taken of each team, they competed in a round-robin with each team playing each other. The top two teams were Spain and the USA. The USA was undefeated going into the championship, but both teams started the competition with a clean slate. The first game Eric Blackledge, on the USA Team took out the game for the win. The second game Bob Hudzik, on the USA team took out the game. The USA only needed one game to win the match, but Team Spain took out the third game. The fourth game Spain again won the game taking the match to a tie-breaker. USA won diddle. After Spain missed their chance for the out, Ben Dersch was up and took the game out winning the championship and huge International Traveling Cup!
Sunday's main events started off with a new event, Women's Combo Luck in two divisions: Women's A & AA Combo Luck and Women's B Combo Luck. Men's Singles started in the afternoon followed by Pro AA & Pro Mixed Cricket Doubles and completing the day's events with Mixed Triples.
Monday was the last day of the BullShooter Finals, but still a full day of events with Pro 501 Singles, Pro AA 501 Singles, Women's B Cricket Doubles, Women's A Cricket Doubles and Women's AA Cricket Doubles all in the morning. In the afternoon Men's Cricket Doubles, Pro Cricket Doubles and Pro AA Cricket Doubles concluded the day's events. In the Pro AA Singles match, in the last four undefeated matches, Scott Miller sent Mike Nelson to the loser's bracket and Ray Carver sent Brad Nichols to the loser's side. Mike Nelson defeated Brad Nichols leaving him 4th place. Scott Miller and Ray Carver played on the winner's side with Scott sending Ray to the loser's side. Ray was defeated by Mike leaving him 3rd place and Mike went to the Bull Pen to face Scott again in the finals. Scott took the match out in two games and claimed the prestigious Pro AA Singles Championship title.
Besides all serious the shooting and tough competition at the BullShooter, Saturday and Sunday nights Arachnid sponsored a party for all dart players and their guests. There was dancing, socializing, cocktails, and partying, but the highlight was when envelopes with $250 in cash was given to ten lucky players on Saturday night and ten players on Sunday night for a total of $5,000. The names were drawn from registration slips to the main events.
The annual Most Valuable Player Awards were presented on Monday. Beautiful gold rings were presented to Shea Reynolds, from New Port Richey, FL and David Cameron, from Canada, for their outstanding placement over the weekend in the main events.
