Under the guidance of teacher Roger Harrington and with the support of Principal Bob Purves, the Forest High School Dart Club has had an extremely successful year. The club is now the largest in the school and boasts 45 members. It still holds the distinction of being the only known high school dart club in North America.
This term, a total of 40 students competed in the double-knockout Open School Championship. The winner of the championship was Josh Firman, who held off a spirited challenge by "B" pool winner Chris Murray. In the second game of the final Murray surprised Firman with a finish of triple five, double bull; but Firman came back to win the set.(As "B" winner, Murray was required to win two sets). In the School Ladies' Championship there were 12 entries. Ladies' "B" pool winner, April Greenbird, took the first set 2-0 over "A" winner Melissa Peters; but Peters came back to win the deciding set 2-0. (Photos are provided of champions and finalists, reading left to right. Photos are also provided of action during the tournament. All tournament games were played during lunchtime break and all players were taught to shoot by teacher, Roger Harrinton.
(Melissa Peters, April Greenbird and Chris Murray are first-time players).
Frustrated with the fact that students resorted to "Killer" and "Cricket" during the lunchtime break, rather than play games and learn to score, teacher, Roger Harrington introduced a ladder competition which incorporated challenges of players, one or two above, to climb the ladder. Because of the short lunch period, a challenge constitutes one game of 201, straight-in, double-out. The competition has been an instant success and it is the only game played at lunchtime. Plans are in effect to run a round-robin tournament at the end of the year for the top eight on the ladder.
