TRI-COUNTIES DART CONFERENCE RECEIVES TRADEMARK
Laguna Beach, CA: TRI-COUNTIES DART CONFERENCE this week received notification from the U.S. Patent and Trademark office that its application for registration of the above name has been granted. The entire process took about 15 months to complete.
"We first talked about this option in 1994", said Sandi Cain, a long-time officer of Tri-Counties, "but we didn't begin the process until the following year. It takes patience and persistence - and more money than we had hoped - but no one can steal the league's name now."
TRI-COUNTIES DART CONFERENCE has operated league play since 1971 in Southern California and hosts two annual tournaments - the ONLY tournaments in Orange County, CA at this time.
Cain recommends that any organization wishing to pursue a trademark for its logo and/or name consult a patent and trademark attorney and get a cost estimate before pursuing this avenue. She also suggested keeping the process as simple as possible by not including any collateral material such as pins or shirts.

T. C. D. C. adds incentives for 1997
The Tri-Counties Board of Directors is offering an incentive program for current league members to help beef up membership and teams for the coming year. So far, this program consists of three parts:
1) Amnesty: anyone placed on the ineligible list prior to 1996 can be reinstated for a mere $5 fee and will once again be eligible to play in league activities. (See separate flyer for details)
2) Player drawing: Any 1996 member who refers a new team for Winter 1997 league play will be entered into a drawing for a free tournament trip. All fees must accompany the new team roster (minimum of two new players on the team) and the referring player must sign the roster next to the captain's signature to be eligible.
3) New format proposals: at the January, 1997 meeting, members will vote on proposals for two additions to league offerings - a singles money league and a novice division. If you have an opinion on either option or would like to hear more, be at the January meeting (details of the meeting will be announced prior to the end of this season).
Dues to increase: fee protection offered to current members
Due to increased expenses and an unexpected downturn in revenue for 1996, the board has voted to increase dues for 1997 - the first such increase inseveral years. As of January 1, full-year dues will be $24 (including $1 ADO membership), summer season dues will be $19 and fall season dues will be $14.
The good news is that any 1996 member who pays 1997 dues PRIOR TO December 31 will be able to retain a $21 membership for one more year. Of course, if you pay be check, it must clear your bank for you to get this special rate protection!
New board takes office Jan. 1
The 1997 Board of Directors will look a lot like the 1996 board, with a few minor adjustments. Current President Ken Davis is retiring from the board to allow him to better juggle work and home activities. Prior to serving as President, Ken served as Vice President and as a board member at large. He was largely responsible for geting our standards back into shape (ok, so they still need paintng, but at least they are functional!) for use at various tournament activities. He also helped with the legue's efforts in north Orange County and with individual recruiting efforts. His service has been apprciated, and we hope you'll thank him for the time he donated on your behalf when you have a chance.
The board will welcome Hilarie Sellers as a board member-at-large to the fold. Hilarie not only brings computer and graphic skills to the group (skills also contributed by board member Brad geurin) but a lot of enthusiasm and new ideas for the league.
Other 1997 officers include Sandi Cain: President, Bill Thompson: Vice President, Craig Dusenberry: Recording Secretary, Debie Davis: Corresponding Secretary, Barry Martin: Treasurer (appointed), and Brad Geurin, Cathy Reither and Dan Rigby as additional board members at large.
If you have ideas you'd like to pass on to the board, feel free to share them with one of these people!
Winter season registration is upon you!
What do TCDC and Pearl Harbor Day have in common? Winter Season rosters are due on Pearl Harbor Day! (For those who thankfully forgot their American history after high school, that's December 7).
Registration information will be out to all sponsors and potential sponsors by the time you read this, so that means it's time to grab one of those puppies and get your team organized BEFORE the holiday rush.
Speaking of holiday rush, that's exactly why rosters are due December 7 - so board members can HAVE holidays. It's no fun to be doing team allocations on Christmas Day! And with Christmas and new Year's falling mid-week, our 1997 schedule had to be adjusted accordingly. So..the best thing you can do is get a roster NOW and get it in! (Don't forget that 1996 dues protection when you're filling out the roster!)
Can't find a roster? If this newsletter was mailed to youm there's one enclosed. Or call a board member for assistance. The important thing is that YOU fill out your own team roster and mail it in with your fees. After all, who knows your team better than you do? Faxed rosters are acceptable, but fees will have to be mailed with the hard copy of this roster!
TCDC reinstates S. Cal. all-stars
Due to the efforts of Tri-Counties, six assocations from across Southern California met on October 19-20 at the Moose Lodge to compete for braffing rights in the first Southern California all-star metch in seven years. Formerly known as the 9-way for the nine associations that took part, this event used to be a tradition in California darting history. When it fell by the wayside, many missed the camaraderie (if not the aching feet and arms!) and urged its return. This year marked the beginning of a new era for this event.
While only six associaitons could field teams this year, it is hoped that the event can continue in 1997 with more associations taking part.
After two long days of darts, the TCDC men's team ended up in second place, while the women's team took third. Participating for the men were Todd Behrns, Greg Davis, Ken Davis, Craig Dusenberry, Mitch Good, Barry Martin, Dan Rigby, Bryan Sanchez, Dieter Schutsch, Brian Sheridan, and don Wherry.
On the women's side, it was Sandi Cain, Julie Cline, Debbie Davis, Carol Jeglinski (playing her last TCDC match before a move to Lake Havasu), Ceci mcKinnie, jan Rigby, Harriett Schutsch, Channa Scott and Joan Sullivan.
Once again, the Moose Lodge provided outstanding hospitality to the dart crowd, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to hungry and tired dart players right to the end (and sharing their tvs for football, too).
A new beginning, a message from the incoming president
As you may have noticed from other items in this newsletter, TCDC board members are trying to move in new directions to meet the needs of players in the 90s. Numerous ideas have been discussed over the past two years, and some are now coming into their own. We hope to continue this trend in 1997. As incoming president, I'd like to share with you a few things I hope our board can accomplish in the coming year - and ask for your help in those efforts.
1) Increase membership
2) Increase teams
3) Establish new programs to offer more people a chance to participate in the sport
4) Secure sponsorship to take our tournament back to $10,000 in prize money for our 20th anniversary.
And speaking of the 20th tournament anniversary in 1997 - all you creative types should start thinking about a great logo for that landmark anniversary. We haven't decided yet what kind of prize we'll award for a logo design, but we WILL have a contest to develop a logo for 1997!

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ALL-STARS CROWN NEW CHAMPS
Laguna Beach, CA: Last week, a former California institution was resurrected after a seven-year lull to the delight of 120 dart players who resumed a weekend of all-star competition for bragging rights and perpetual trophies.
Once known as the "9-Way" All-Star Match (cleverly named for the nine associations that took part), and fondly referred to as "Suicide Weekend" for the aches and pains brought on by marathon-style darts, the all-star match fell by the wayside when former organizers could find no one to follow in their footsteps.
Players, though, never forgot the fun and camaraderie, and this year Tri-Counties Dart Conference stepped up and brought the event back to life. Though eight associations originally committed to play, only six were able to field teams. And those six fought for every point to see who would be the champs for the coming year.
Teams consisted of 10 men and 9 women playing singles, doubles and team games of 01 in a round robin format. The results were as follows:
