The traditional type of dart, with metal points. These are intended to be thrown at bristle dartboards, or cheaper paper or wooden dartboards.
These darts have plastic points, usually replaceable, and are generally very light weight compared to traditional steel-tip darts. They were developed for use on electronic coin-operated bar games, but will work equally well with good quality bristle dartboards.
The plastic-faced boards, that these were designed to work with, have thousands of tiny holes in them. The plastic points fit into these holes, and press against a sensor pad behind the facing. This enables the machines to automatically keep score.
Some darts bounce off the dartboard without sticking in the holes, and in such cases the machine may or may not record a score. The general rule is that "the machine is always right", and the auto-score is the one that counts.
Many home versions of the soft-tip board are also produced, both with and without the electronic scoring features.
Electronic coin-operated soft-tip darts machines are made by several companies, but Arachnid is the largest & best known manufacturer in the USA. Until recently, the maximum weight dart allowed on their machines was 18 grams, however the soft-tip weight was increased to 20 grams in January, 2016. Other companies, such as Darts Live, allow soft-tip darts weights up to 25 grams.
